Safety Tip - May 2004: Seatbelt Safety

This May the University of California, Irvine Police Department is participating in the Click It Or Ticket Mobilization. With Memorial Day fast approaching and the start of vacation season, it is essential that you buckle your seat belt and make sure that your passengers do so as well.

  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children of all races age 2-14.
  • In 2002, motor vehicle crashes took the lives of 1,785 child passenger vehicle occupants from birth to age 15 and injured 227,000 more.
  • Fifty percent of the 1,785 children who died in crashes were not buckled in.
  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15-34 year-olds.
  • The best way to protect children from other crash-related injuries is to ensure that children are properly restrained in the BACK seat of the car.
  • From 1996-2001, 1,700 children’s lives were saved by the fact that they were seated in the backseat.

In Irvine alone, 50% of the fatal traffic collisions in 1999 occurred blocks away from the person’s home or place of employment.

Remember to buckle your seat belt and passengers for your safety and theirs.
